Make funky lamps and lights using simple materials lying around your house.

Looking at brightening up your home? Well, it is time you ditch conventional lights and chandeliers and break out your own crafting skills to make your home look positively dazzling. We list 5 excellent DIY (Do-It-Yourself) techniques that will literally brighten your day.

1) It is makeover time for your lamps.

Let’s start with the lamps you have at home, and give them a glamorous makeover. Wind them with colourful wool threads; add a little shimmer and the result will be something that will wow everyone who sees it. You can also jazz up old lampshades by painting designs across it, allowing the light to throw vivid patterns across the room.

2) You can’t go wrong with paper lanterns.

They are easy to make, absolutely pretty and give a personal touch. Use tissue paper or crepe paper and either cut out a shape or draw the shadow of an animal or object and support it by bending wire in the shape of a cylinder. Or stretch out a paper on a wooden frame and punch holes in the paper in specific designs, drop in a tiny coloured bulb and see the patterns playing on the wall.

3) Put those empty jam jars to good use.

Paint empty tin cans, barrels, anything round and hollow, add a bulb and hang them from the ceiling of your kitchen or dining room. Take out all your glass mason jars and drop in multi-colour serial lights. Fill the jar with confetti, glitter or you could even add a white dust and tiny figures and make it look like a snow-flake-jar. These adorable jars could be lined up across a table in the living room and by adding different coloured lights in them you could give it that dreamy look.

4) Root through the cupboards for antiques.

Dig out your grandmother’s lanterns, add a small candle or fairy lights and hang them in the corner of the room, the balcony or in the garden. You could also recycle old oil lamps and incense stick wooden boxes and know for certain that these will definitely stand out.

5) Get your kids involved with simple art and craft.

You can make this your kids’ weekend activity. Blow a balloon and paint glue all over it. Stick string, tissue, crepe paper, spoons or crumpled plastic bags all over it and leave it to dry. Once it has dried, pop the balloon, push in a coloured bulb inside and your beautiful spherical magic ball is ready. These chandeliers splash beautiful patterns across the wall and floor and make for the perfect embellishment to any room.
